Environmental Health and Safety Training

As part of state (TOSHA) and federal (OSHA) requirements, ETSU must provide annual training to faculty and staff who work with hazardous materials or in hazardous situations. In the past, the training was done with paper and records were kept in a spreadsheet. In 2010, the ETC developed an Online Training System for the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). The system includes training modules for Bloodborne Pathogens, Portable Fire Extinguishers, and Hazardous Waste, among others, and was integrated into the existing EHS web site. Each module allows users to read through training material, and then take a quiz at the end. Their quiz attempts are store in a database, which allows EHS staff to easily generate reports.

The training application was so successful that Middle TN State University (MTSU) also wished to use it for their environmental health and safety training. In 2011, the training site was modified so that both MTSU and ETSU could use it. More features, such as departmental administrators, were added so that students in Chemistry, Art, and Biology labs could take the training as well. New modules are continually being created, including the recently added training for radiation safety.

To date, four TBR institutions use the Online Training System developed by the ETC. This include Southwest TN State Community College, Northeast State Community College, Jackson State Community College, East TN State University and Middle TN State University.
